The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is a labor organization within the hospitals and health care sector, based in New York City, New York. It is the country’s oldest and largest housestaff union, representing more than 22,000 resident physicians across California, Florida, Illinois, New England, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York and Washington, D.C. CIR negotiates contracts that govern salary, benefits, hours, and working conditions, with the aim of improving patient care. Beyond collective bargaining, CIR supports member well-being and community health through Quality Improvement initiatives, neighborhood health programs for underserved populations, and member events such as Women in Medicine and Physicians of Color.
