Communities In Schools of Memphis (CISM) operates as the Memphis affiliate of the national Communities In Schools network. The CIS network is described as the leading and most effective dropout prevention organization in America, and the only one proven to reduce dropout rates and improve on-time graduation. Based in Memphis, Tennessee, CISM aims to surround students with a community of support to help them stay in school and succeed. CISM works to remove non-academic barriers to learning, such as hunger, limited parental involvement, housing instability, clothing needs, and exposure to violence or drugs. In partnership with the Achievement School District and Shelby County Schools, it provides and brokers daily, school-based interventions for students in grades K–12 to address academic failure, truancy, behavioral issues, and social service needs.
