Based in Somerville, Massachusetts, the Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS) is a non-profit designated as the city’s anti-poverty agency since 1981. It pursues a holistic approach that links housing, health, employment, nutrition, immigration, education, transportation, and civic engagement, delivering services directly or through referrals. Its core programs include Head Start, the Housing Advocacy Program, Community Organizing and Advocacy, and Free Tax Preparation Assistance through VITA. CAAS aims to help local families and individuals achieve financial security while addressing the root causes of economic injustice, supported by staff, volunteers, and funding from federal, state, local, and private sources. In August 2024 it launched a new community campaign, 1-5-10: Neighbors Helping Neighbors, reflecting ongoing outreach and collaboration with local partners, such as past efforts to pilot subsidized MBTA passes for low-income households.
