The Congress for the New Urbanism is an architecture and planning organization based in Oakland, California, that promotes walkable, mixed-use neighborhood development, sustainable communities, and healthier living conditions. Drawing on its Charter-inspired principles, it advocates for livable streets in compact blocks, diverse housing choices, destinations reachable by walking, biking, or transit, and a human-scaled public realm in which buildings define and enliven streets. Its work spans multiple scales and geographies, aiming to reinforce the character of existing places and make regions more livable and cohesive. 

The organization engages a network of urban designers, policymakers, developers, academics, and citizen advocates to help communities implement these principles across North America and beyond. In late 2022, CNU appointed Mallory Baches as president, to co-lead with Executive Director Margaret Gattis, signaling continued leadership expansion as it pursues its zoning and planning-focused agenda.
