The Council of the Great Lakes Region is a non-profit organization based in Ottawa, Ontario, that brings together leaders from government, business, academia, and non-governmental organizations across borders and sectors to address sustainability challenges in the Great Lakes region. Its aim is to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration to advance regional sustainability, with the goal of creating the first sustainable region in North America and the world. Over the years it has driven initiatives such as a Circular Economy Strategy and Action Plan, released in 2022, and the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup launched in 2020. The organization serves policymakers, business leaders, researchers, and NGOs across Canada and the United States who collaborate on sustainability projects in the Great Lakes corridor. Recent developments reflect leadership changes in 2025, including the appointment of Vance Badawey as President and Chief Executive Officer in September and, later in November, a subsequent appointment of Dave Norris as CEO. The organization has also engaged in cross-border partnerships and events, such as organizing the Great Lakes Sustainable Growth Forum in partnership with the Toronto Region Board of Trade in 2024.
