Passaic County operates as a county-level government administration serving 16 municipalities in northern New Jersey, with offices in Paterson. It oversees public services and county facilities, including the Preakness Healthcare Center, a county-run nursing facility. The county covers about 186 square miles of land and, according to the 2020 census, has a population of approximately 524,118. The county was created in 1837 from parts of Essex and Bergen Counties under the legislation that also formed Atlantic County. It borders New York to the north and is surrounded by Sussex, Morris, Essex, and Bergen counties, comprising 16 municipalities. In 2024, Passaic County announced the launch of a microtransit program to expand transportation options for residents in Passaic and Clifton.
