Courageous Sailing Center, based in Boston, Massachusetts, operates as a year‑round educational organization within the sports and recreation instruction sector. Established in 1987 by Harry McDonough, it was founded to use sailing as a means to bring together children from diverse economic and ethnic backgrounds and to develop life skills. The center organizes youth programs as its core offering, alongside adult lessons, sailing for people with special needs, corporate teambuilding, and other youth development opportunities. It prioritizes equitable access to high‑quality, multi‑year learning experiences and serves roughly 1,000 young people each year, with a large share participating for free in multi‑week programs and many benefitting from need‑based scholarships. A sizeable portion of its summer sailors come from diverse backgrounds, and many stay involved for ten years or more, often progressing to instructor roles or training programs.

Evaluations over time indicate Courageous programs support leadership development, critical 21st‑century skills, and increased confidence as sailors and swimmers, with an additional summer academic support program run in partnership with Boston Public Schools that aims to boost academic engagement. The organization occupies a position within the community sailing and youth development landscape, offering a combination of youth programming and related services such as adult sailing and corporate engagement. Based in Boston, the organization is described as mid‑sized and has a history of collaborating with local partners. In August 2023, Courageous partnered with Navy Yard Garden & Art to provide campers with an opportunity to work with sculptor Michael Alfano, illustrating continued collaboration with local community initiatives.
