CCIS operates as a program of Heartland Alliance Health, based in Chicago and serving the Metropolitan Chicago area. Founded in 1996 to improve access for Limited-English-Proficiency clients, it was the first program in Illinois to recruit, assess language skills, and train in medical interpreting. It provides on-site, telephonic, and video interpreting, including American Sign Language, along with document translation that covers localization and desktop publishing. The services target healthcare providers and other organizations serving LEP populations, addressing language barriers that can impede access to care. Proceeds from language services support Heartland Alliance Health's health-care initiatives, and CCIS offers a 60-hour Medical Interpreter Course as part of its interpreter training program.
