CultureSeed is a nonprofit organization based in White Salmon, Washington, serving youth and communities in the Columbia Gorge region. The organization operates from a rural area noted for its economic disparities and scenic landscape, offering outdoor and community engagement programs that emphasize connection to nature, self, and others for underserved youth, as well as initiatives focused on incarcerated individuals and juvenile justice reform. Through the Year-Round Outdoor & Community Engagement Youth Cohort, CultureSeed provides monthly outings, circles, overnights, and a week-long backpacking trip, while also linking youth caregivers to local resources; its Bending the Bars program extends nature-based wellness and outdoor experiences to inmates, and supports alternatives to incarceration for regional youth under probation. In addition to programming, CultureSeed seeks to foster inclusion in outdoor recreation and the local economy by pairing graduates with training, mentorship, and employment opportunities as they advance. The organization operates on a multi-acre site at the confluence of Buck Creek and the White Salmon River, on lands historically connected to several Indigenous communities. A recent local update notes that CultureSeed received a grant funding support in early 2021.
