Dawson Public Power District is a rural electric utility serving south central Nebraska, with more than 23,000 electric meters and over 5,700 miles of distribution lines along the Platte River Valley. Its service territory encompasses all rural areas of Dawson and Buffalo Counties, portions of Gosper, Lincoln, Custer, Sherman and Frontier Counties, and includes many villages such as Hershey, Maxwell, Brady, Farnam, Eustis, Elwood, Eddyville, Smithfield, Overton, Sumner, Miller, Riverdale, Amherst, Odessa and Plesanton. The district operates from its headquarters in Lexington, Nebraska, and maintains service centers in North Platte, Gothenburg, Sumner, Kearney and Ravenna; governance is provided by an elected eleven-member board, and it is affiliated with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and the Nebraska Rural Electric Association. It provides electrical service to its rural customers and small communities, maintaining the infrastructure necessary to deliver electricity and respond to outages; outages can be reported at 1-800-752-8305, with Lexington office hours 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A notable recent development is a merger with Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District completed in August 2023, reflecting broader regional coordination.
