Founded in 1983, the Democratic Governors Association is an independent voluntary political organization that supports Democratic governors and candidates across the United States. Based in Washington, DC, it is the only group dedicated to electing Democratic governors and participates in campaigns at all levels by providing resources to sustain operations and help craft campaign messaging. The organization also offers expert policy guidance to governors and candidates through regular policy conferences focused on topics such as biotechnology, life sciences, and the evolving energy economy. It currently supports the 20 Democratic governors who hold office. In June 2026, Steve Bullock was named chair of the DGA, a leadership appointment noted alongside his other gubernatorial leadership roles.
