The Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO, operates as a coalition within the AFL-CIO that coordinates 24 unions to advocate for and support professional and technical workers. Its affiliates represent professionals across more than 300 occupations in education and healthcare; science, engineering, and technology; legal, business and management; media, entertainment and the arts; and public administration. Based in Washington, DC, the organization maintains a small staff that focuses on coordinating its member unions and advancing the interests of professional workers within the labor movement.

In 2018, DPE released a publication titled The Professional and Technical Work Force: A New Frontier for Unions, which surveys the expansion of professional and technical occupations and the development of unions within them. The document notes how these occupations have grown in the United States and describes the ways unions have formed and evolved to represent them. This development illustrates DPE’s role in analyzing and supporting professional and technical labor within the broader civic and social sector.
