Holly Hamilton Mendonsa was born in Washington, DC and moved to the town of Fairhaven, Massachusetts as a child. Fairhaven, a suburb of the city of New Bedford, is a fishing community in its own right, as well as being the # 1 fishing port in the United States. Fairhaven is a town that is deep seeded in it's own history as well. This community has been a home to many famous historical figures over the years such as Henry Huttleston Rogers, The Standard Oil Millionaire; Frederick Douglass, The great abolitionist; as well as Joshua Slocum and William H. Whitfield, the renowned whaling captains who rescued Manjiro Nakahama at sea, this Japanese boy was the first Japanese person to reside in the United States. Holly was lucky enough to grow up in the home where young Manjiro lived as a boy. Her family was visited by the Emperor and Empress of Japan in the early 1990's. Fairhaven was the birthplace of The Delano family who brought forth two U.S. Presidents, Ulysses S. Grant and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, both descendants of Lt. Jonathan Delano.
