The credit union began operations shortly after the 1929 stock market crash, establishing itself as a longstanding community financial institution in Michigan. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Michigan, and the organization offers a broad set of financial products with guidance for various life stages. It operates four branches in Detroit, Novi, and Clawson and serves more than 25,000 members, with deposits protected by federal insurance as an NCUA member and Equal Housing Lender.

The institution holds more than $400 million in assets and provides access to a large network of shared branches and surcharge-free ATMs beyond its branches. In November 2023, Sati Smith was named CEO, becoming the credit union's first African American chief executive.
