Douglass Winthrop is a New York City based SEC registered investment advisor. As of June 30, 2025 the firm manages approximately $6.3 billion for individuals, families, trusts, and endowments. Douglass Winthrop is owned and managed by its principals. We manage long-only equity and balanced accounts that are customized to the individual needs, objectives and risk tolerance of each client. We offer wealth management advice to clients when relevant. Our fee structure is simple and fair, keeping our goals aligned with those of our clients at all times. Our primary objective is to grow and preserve our clients' capital.

Philosophy

We believe long term ownership of high quality stocks and bonds is the best strategy for compounding and preserving wealth. Our portfolios typically have 25 to 30 stocks with an average holding period of three to five years. In balanced portfolios, we invest in high quality corporate, municipal and agency bonds. The principles of value investing underlie our approach to portfolio management. We own companies led by high integrity owner-managers, who run their firms for the benefit of shareholders. We select companies with near-permanent advantages arising from brand, industry leadership or economies of scale that increase the chances for success in times of stress. Strong balance sheets back all of our equity and corporate bond holdings. 

We invest relatively more capital behind our highest conviction ideas. Our approach aims to minimize the risk of capital loss while achieving superior results.
