Based in Royal Oak, Michigan, the Economic Justice Alliance of Michigan is a nonprofit coalition of grassroots organizations focused on advancing economic justice and racial equity in the state and its cities. The alliance mobilizes low-wage and working-class communities by developing advocacy and policy campaigns intended to improve economic conditions for those it serves and others. Formed in fall 2013, EJAM traces its roots to Michigan’s organizing tradition, and its founding partner organizations are led by African American women representing a diverse membership that includes restaurant workers, mothers of color, workers of faith, and Detroit residents. By prioritizing local leadership and collaboration, the coalition works to ensure Detroiters have a voice in the city’s future. 

Leadership development is central to EJAM, with programs such as the Michigan Economic Justice Fellowship and Local Candidate & Campaign Manager training designed to strengthen leaders’ ability to advocate for their communities and advance racial justice in Michigan. Through the collaboration of its member organizations, EJAM aims to build lasting working-class power across Michigan, including past efforts that contributed to raising Michigan’s minimum wage in 2014 and expanding earned paid sick days.
