The Edinburgh International Book Festival, a mid-sized charity based in Edinburgh, Scotland, began in 1983 and operates as a not-for-profit cultural organization. Since 1997 it has shifted from a biennial event to an annual festival that stages more than 900 author events across a broad range of topics for adults, children, schools and communities. Through its Communities Programme, launched in 2015, the festival takes its programming beyond the capital to Scotland with events in prisons, hospitals and arts centres, tailored to local needs. The organization adapted to the pandemic by running a fully online festival in 2020 and returning to in-person attendance alongside online access in 2021 at a new venue, Edinburgh College of Art. In 2025 it announced a multi-year partnership with Celtic Connections, signaling continued collaboration with other Scottish arts organisations to create original commissions and broaden reach.
