While the name Zabar is synonymous with smoked fish and the quintessential New York brunch, Eli Zabar envisioned a different kind of food store from his family’s West Side landmark delicatessen. Inspired by the food halls and markets of London and Paris, Eli’s has become an institution on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, directly across town from the store and home where he grew up. Best known as New York City’s pioneering gourmet food purveyor, Eli Zabar first opened New York's beloved E.A.T. in 1973. Over the last four decades, Eli's empire has grown to include his flagship market, Eli’s Market at 80th & Third Avenue; Eli’s Market at The Vinegar Factory; Eli’s Markets at Grand Central (Bread & Pastry; Farm to Market); New York's beloved E.A.T. Café; E.A.T. Gifts; Eli’s Table, and the adjacent wine shop, Eli’s List; Eli’s Bread; Eli’s Essentials, grab-and-go cafes; Eli's Gift Baskets; Eli’s Night Shift and Eli’s Bar '91 (the most recent additions to Eli's restaurants), as well as the recently re-designed e-commerce sites, www.elizabar.com and www.elizabarwine.com. Throughout his storied career, Eli has kept New Yorkers well-fed with the highest-quality, most-carefully sourced ingredients and products, along with his signature handmade breads & pastries, all with a seasonally-driven European sensibility. Most recently, Eli has been excited to share his passion and knowledge of European wines that celebrate lesser known vintners making beautiful, expressive wines, whatever their terroir, at Eli's List and on the nightly rotating wine lists at Eli's restaurants.
