Some years ago a religious leader spoke to my congregation about the dangers of pornography. He explained that because it is so pervasive and damaging we all need to take steps to protect ourselves on the internet. Next, he told us how he had an internet filter running on his personal computer, and that only his wife knew the password. His recommendation was that we all go home and install something similar on our own computers. I followed his recommendation and searched out the highest-rated filtering software but soon found that it didn't work well for me. Sometimes, the filter would block things I needed access to and, embarrassingly, this even happened once during a group project at school. I quickly realized that for this to work, I needed something that simply and reliably monitored my actions and reported them to my wife. Luckily, I love building things and have made a career out of writing software. Having the tools and a vision, I started working on an accountability system for my phone that would function exactly how I wanted it to. I started by designing it to run in the background and stay out my way. Because my wife has a busy life, I spent a lot of time making the weekly reports complete yet easy to read. I made sure that the system would never consume more than a trickle of battery. Most importantly, I ensured the app would not provide loopholes that let me disable or uninstall it without first sending my wife an alert. It would be pointless if I could get around it.
