Expanse was founded in 2012 as Qadium, with origins tied to DARPA, and later rebranded before being acquired by Palo Alto Networks in 2020. Based in San Francisco, California, the company operates in software development and focuses on uncovering Internet-facing risks that are not readily detected by other means, enabling organizations to discover, manage, and secure their global Internet assets. Its customer base includes organizations that account for more than a tenth of the routable Internet. Cortex Xpanse is Palo Alto Networks’ Attack Surface Management platform for Internet Operations Management, used by CISOs, IT teams, and SOC teams worldwide. In June 2026, Palo Alto Networks announced Sovereign Cortex in collaboration with T Security, reflecting ongoing expansion of its security offerings.
