Expedition Education Institute was a higher education program based in Belfast, Maine, offering traveling semesters designed for gap year and college students. The program emphasized deep connections with the natural world, peer learning communities, and personal development toward leadership and educational change, with the goal of helping students explore passions and build 21st-century skills through reflective, experiential learning. In partnership with Marlboro College, EEI provided a full semester worth 15 college credits, and could facilitate transfer of federal financial aid for students from other institutions, while gap year participants could choose to enroll with or without credit. The Institute grew out of the Audubon Expedition Institute and extended a historical lineage before ending alongside Marlboro College’s closure and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The organization positioned itself within the broader higher education field as a programmatic option for immersive, nature-centric study and personal development, typically serving college and gap year students seeking a transformative educational experience.
