Experiment In Self Reliance (ESR) is a nonprofit Community Action Agency established in 1964 as part of the War on Poverty. ESR offers case management, personal and budget counseling, first time home ownership training, educational assistance, economic literacy training, housing assistance, and other services for working homeless and working low-income residents of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County area in North Carolina.

Our programs include:
Self-Sufficiency - Educational assistance, Economic Literacy, employment retention, budgeting
Housing Services - Housing related services for working homeless clients, housing placement
Individual Development Accounts (IDA) - First time home ownership program for working low income
Forsyth Free Tax (EITC/VITA) - Free tax return preparation, economic literacy (open to the public)

We are a 501(c)3 agency, receiving funding through the City of Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, and Federal block grants, as well as private individual and foundation grants and gifts. We are a United Way agency.
