Family Tree Nursery operates as a garden center chain in the retail horticulture sector, with three locations in the Kansas City area: Overland Park, Shawnee, and Liberty. It began in 1964 as a wholesale growing facility supplying other retailers with gift plants such as poinsettias and mums, and now maintains its own greenhouses producing a broad selection of bedding plants, perennials, and hanging baskets. The company emphasizes that most bedding plants are grown in-house, and it travels nationwide to scout trial gardens and test sites to identify varieties suited to its growing conditions.

Led by the Nelson family, the business expanded through acquisitions of the Shawnee store in 1981 and the Liberty store in 1988, and added a growing facility in 1986, supported by a sizeable workforce. A notable development in recent years is the Shawnee facility's modernization and expansion in 2021, reflecting ongoing capacity growth.
