He Whenua Rangatira - A district of sustainable prosperity and well-being. For some, it could be merely an aim or an aspiration. For the Far North District Council, it is much more.  For us, it is the vision that drives our day-to-day operations. It is also our absolute commitment to our communities:  to deliver the infrastructure and services that support economic progress and social well-being. And it is our challenge. We administer one of the largest and most diverse territorial authorities in New Zealand. Our total land area is over 7000 square kilometres and our coastline is 1,800 kilometres. Our permanent population is only 55,000, scattered throughout the district in small communities and in rural areas. The infrastructure demands are substantial – the rating base is small. Yet, we are committed to  delivering He Whenua Rangatira. We do this by careful planning and faultless execution. We succeed because we have a strong visionary Council of elected members, and skilled and committed staff.  We succeed because we engage with our communities and we build relationships with Tangata Whenua. We succeed because we learn from others and we initiate opportunities for ourselves. But, most of all perhaps, we succeed because of who and what we are – the Far North. A district of sustainable prosperity and wellbeing and a great place to live, work and play. He Whenua Rangatira.
