The Farmington River Watershed Association is a small nonprofit based in Simsbury Center, Connecticut, founded in 1953 to preserve, protect, and restore the Farmington River and its watershed lands. It pursues this mission through research, water monitoring, habitat restoration projects, education about rivers and water issues, and advocacy for sound water policies at local, state, and national levels. Its water-monitoring program collects scientific data used by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to inform river protection and planning, and the organization undertakes streambank and habitat restoration, including dam removals and native plant community restoration. FRWA engages with communities through education programs—curriculum, classroom visits, field trips, student employment, and workshops on topics such as water conservation and stormwater management—along with river cleanups, canoe trips, paddling events, and watershed tours. In policy matters, the association advocates for watershed protection and river-friendly practices, and has achieved permanent federal Wild and Scenic protection for two major segments of the Farmington River; it has also recently partnered with the City of Bristol to establish a 13,500-square-foot riparian buffer on Veterans Memorial Boulevard.
