Fisk University is a private liberal arts institution located in Nashville, Tennessee, founded in 1866. Operating in the higher education sector, it serves as a mid-sized university with a historically Black college and university identity. The institution has earned national recognition for academic distinction, including a 2018 ranking by U.S. News & World Report as a Top 10 HBCU and a 2017 ranking by The Washington Monthly that named Fisk third in the nation for research expenditures among national liberal arts colleges. Recent developments in 2026 point to a broad campus modernization effort, including plans to establish an innovation center and expand facilities in Nashville's North Nashville area. These announcements reflect a focus on upgrading infrastructure to support data and technology-related capabilities, while engaging the surrounding community in the process. Fisk's long-standing emphasis on liberal arts education and its historical role as an HBCU position it within the higher education landscape as an established, research-active institution in the Nashville region.
