Florida A&M University (FAMU) is a public higher education institution located in Tallahassee, Florida, at 1601 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Tallahassee 32307. Founded on October 3, 1887, as the State Normal College for Colored Students, the university began with 15 students and two instructors and is now one of nine institutions in the State University System. As an 1890 land-grant university, FAMU aims to provide an enlightened, intellectual, moral, cultural, ethical, and student-centered environment that develops highly qualified individuals prepared to serve as leaders and contributors in a changing society, with a focus on integrity and ethical conduct. The university emphasizes inspirational teaching and partnerships across local, state, national, and global levels and welcomes students of all races, ethnic origins, and nationalities into a caring, respectful community.
