Formed in 2002, Food AND Medicine is a unique, grassroots nonprofit working to empower low-income Mainers to address issues causing and resulting from poverty. We use a hybrid of direct service and grassroots organizing to build collective power among people whose voice is often overlooked. Our name is based on the belief that no one should have to choose between food, medicine and other basic necessities. Our current programs include: access to local food through a network of 30+ collective and community gardens in low-income housing, recovery centers and churches; advocating for improved public transportation in the Bangor region; political education and civic engagement, connecting low-income and working class people with our elected officials. Food and Medicine (FAM) partners with unions, farmers and faith groups in the Bangor region to organize for change. FAM is a chapter of national Jobs with Justice, and our staff are members of NOLSW-UAW.
