Freedom of the Press Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on protecting and empowering public-interest journalism in the modern era. It aims to safeguard First and Fourth Amendment rights for the press by supporting encryption development, documenting attacks on journalists, training newsrooms in digital security, and advocating for the public's right to know. Its work is directed at journalists, news organizations, and advocates of open government in the United States and abroad. Based in Brooklyn, New York, the organization operates within the technology, information and internet sector and maintains a small-to-mid-sized nonprofit footprint. In May 2023, it partnered with the Florida First Amendment Foundation to publish a guide covering journalists' rights under the PPA (and state shield laws), as well as how journalists should respond if police knock on their doors or attempt to seize their newsgathering equipment.
