GARR operates Italy's national ultra-broadband network for the education and research community, based in Rome, Lazio. It delivers high-performance connectivity and develops services to support the daily activities of teachers, researchers and students, while enabling international collaboration. The network is designed and run by the GARR Consortium, a non-profit association aligned with the Ministry of University and Research, whose members include CNR, ENEA, INFN, and the nation's universities and research institutes. With about 24,000 kilometers of optical fibre deployed nationwide, GARR serves more than three million users across roughly 1,000 sites, including research centers, universities, biomedical research hospitals, cultural institutions, libraries, museums and schools. The network interconnects with the international research and education system and with the global Internet, and remains part of the European research network GEANT via an 800 Gbps link, supporting global collaboration. Through these interconnections, Italian researchers can access large data repositories, compute resources and cloud-based applications offered by the community.
