Gateway is a computer hardware manufacturer headquartered in Irvine, California, with roots dating to 1985 when it was founded in an Iowa farmhouse. It evolved into a nationally recognized PC brand, marked by its distinctive packaging in the early 1990s and its 1993 entry into the Fortune 500 after going public. The company expanded through the 2004 acquisition of eMachines and moved its headquarters to Irvine, with its products distributed through major retailers, e-tailers, and channel partners in the United States and international markets. In 2007 Gateway was acquired by Acer, and the combined entities are described as the third-largest PC company in the world. The Irvine location remains the U.S. base, while Gateway’s products reach customers across the United States, Canada, China, Europe, Japan, and Mexico.
