General Finishes was founded in 1928 by a Milwaukee lumber company to make finishes for their cabinet-shop customers. For 25 years General Finishes has devoted itself to engineering the best water based stains and finishes available. Our dedication to this task has placed us as the premier water-based company in America; we simply know water chemistry better than anyone else. 

We started in the consumer market a decade other companies got their feet wet in water. We moved on to the cabinet and millwork industry, and today General Finishes’ products are recognized as the finest in those markets and distribute throughout the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. 

Currently, we manufacture the country's finest professional water-based finishes, award winning retail water-based finishes, furniture paints and oil-based finishes, including the virally popular Java Gel stain. 

In 2013, we turned our attention to the wood flooring industry, where many companies have introduced water base stains and all have failed. General Finishes’ Pro Floor Stain not only works like an oil base stain, it outperforms them. It is the future of staining hardwood flooring.
