Girls on the Run Greater Charlotte operates in the wellness and fitness services sector as the founding council of Girls on the Run International. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the council coordinates programs across six counties—Mecklenburg, Gaston, Lincoln, Cleveland, Catawba and Cabarrus—and serves about 4,000 girls annually through approximately 200 program sites. The broader Girls on the Run initiative began in 1996 when Molly Barker, with the help of thirteen girls at a Charlotte school, launched the program in Charlotte.
