Gluster develops an open storage software platform that enables scale-out storage across data centers, virtualized environments, and cloud deployments. The platform runs on commodity computing and storage resources, whether on premises or in the public cloud, allowing on-demand increases in performance, capacity, and availability. It virtualizes disk and memory resources into a single, centrally managed pool through a unified global namespace.

The solution is used by enterprises in industries such as digital media delivery, healthcare, internet services, energy, and biotech to support traditional data-center needs and shared storage across different environments. It is described as an open-source option for scalable storage that enables scale at a fraction of the cost of traditional proprietary and monolithic systems. Gluster is based in Sunnyvale, California, and operates as a small team.
