The Great Lakes Commission is a binational government agency established in 1955 to protect the Great Lakes and the economies and ecosystems they support. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, it brings together leaders from eight U.S. states and two Canadian provinces in the Great Lakes basin. Operating in the government administration space, the commission develops policies and practices aimed at balancing water use, development, and conservation, while enabling cross-jurisdictional collaboration on issues that no single community can address alone.

Its work centers on serving regional decision-makers and public authorities, guiding coordinated efforts to manage water resources and protect the region's ecosystems and economies. The commission has pursued data- and policy-oriented initiatives, including launching the Great Lakes Water Use Database in 2024 and pursuing programs to address invasive species such as Phragmites. A recent development in March 2026 involved issuing a request for proposals to manage invasive Phragmites, reflecting ongoing programmatic activity.
