Guide Dogs for the Blind is a consumer services organization and the largest guide dog school in North America, based in San Rafael, California, and founded in 1942. It builds life-changing partnerships by preparing guide dogs and K9 Buddy dogs and by delivering client services, readiness training, and youth programs for people who are blind or visually impaired. All services are provided free of charge, including personalized training and ongoing support, with financial assistance for veterinary care if needed, funded by donors and volunteers. The organization operates through a network of instructors, puppy raisers, donors, and volunteers, and it also advocates for disability rights and inclusion. It has graduated more than 16,000 guide dog teams across the U.S. and Canada and is accredited by the International Guide Dog Federation. In 2026, it launched Advocacy Month to highlight progress in disability rights, and the City of San Rafael announced a partnership with the organization in March 2026.
