Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark serves Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties from its base in Newark, New Jersey. Founded in 1986 as an ecumenical faith-based ministry, it works to build simple, decent homes for low- and moderate-income families in Newark and surrounding areas. Partner Families contribute at least 200 hours of sweat equity, and the organization provides a zero-interest mortgage upon completion. The effort draws on donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, faith-based organizations, and thousands of volunteers and partner nonprofits, and has benefited nearly 100 families to date. As part of the broader Habitat for Humanity network, the chapter participates in a global movement that mobilizes volunteers to build or improve homes and promote affordable homeownership. It operates with a relatively small to mid-sized staff in Newark, New Jersey. In 2026, the organization marked its 40th anniversary with a Leadership & Legacy Celebration.
