The High Court of Australia is the apex court in the Australian judiciary, established in 1901 by Section 71 of the Constitution to interpret and apply Australian law and to decide cases of federal significance, including challenges to the constitutional validity of laws. It also hears appeals by special leave from Federal, State and Territory courts, helping set binding precedents for the broader legal system. The court is based in Canberra, occupying its own building within the Parliamentary Triangle, and maintains registry offices in Sydney and Melbourne; in Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin and Perth, registry functions are performed by officers of the Federal Court of Australia, while in Hobart they are carried out by officers of the Supreme Court of Tasmania.
The High Court operates as a mid-sized national institution within the administration of justice, and a notable development in 2023 was the launch of an Integrated Video Surveillance System and Courtroom Live Audio-Visual Streaming System to support monitoring and access to proceedings.
