Hildebrand Family Self-Help Center is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that assists families in transitioning from homelessness to safe, affordable permanent housing. Founded in 1988 as an outgrowth of St. Paul AME Church's social action ministry, it operates both emergency shelter units and permanent housing across Boston and Cambridge, serving more than 300 families (about 1,100 individuals) each year. Its mission pursues changes to the systems that sustain poverty and homelessness, with the long-term aim that every family finds a home. In the most recent year for which data is available, 102 families moved from shelter into permanent housing, and 95% of Stabilization Services participants remained housed for at least two years after shelter. The organization has expanded its affordable housing capacity through acquisitions such as an 11-unit building in Dorchester, which doubled capacity to 22 units, and it collaborates with local funders including The Boston Foundation, CHAPA, and United Way on neighborhood emergency housing initiatives.
