// What does ‘hokku’ mean? 

Hokku is the opening stanza of a Japanese poem called the renga. It’s a collaborative poem with alternating stanzas linked in succession by multiple poets. In the opening stanza, the hokku sets the tone, environment and context for all the verses to follow.
