Human Needs Project is a mid-sized nonprofit in the community services sector, based in San Rafael, California. It pursues an integrated approach to poverty alleviation by delivering a single platform that combines essential services and supports for people living in slums to thrive. Its Kibera Town Centre, an 8,000-square-foot pilot facility in Kibera—the largest slum in Africa, embodies this model with green infrastructure and renewable energy at its core. The center includes a water filtration system and a waste-treatment system, underpinned by a 20,000-liter-per-hour well and a grid-tied 35-kilowatt solar-battery system. KTC is managed entirely by Kibera residents and was conceived after four years of community engagement to ensure the services reflect local demand, spanning clean water, sanitary facilities, laundry, and food alongside digital education, vocational training, and arts-based career development. In October 2024, the organization expanded its facilities to Nairobi, Kenya.
