The Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network (ICAHN) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2003 and made up of 60 small and rural hospitals throughout Illinois. Most of our members are designated as Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) — a federal designation designed to ensure rural residents have access to essential care close to home. These hospitals are vital — and vulnerable. Nearly 40% of Illinois rural hospitals operate at a financial loss, and workforce shortages, Medicare and Medicaid funding debates, and rising costs all place incredible pressure on these institutions. Yet they continue to serve with resilience, innovation, and heart.
