IBPA is a trade association serving independent publishers, including traditional and hybrid houses, author-publishers, and university or nonprofit presses. Founded in 1983 and based in the United States, it supports publishers both domestically and internationally. Its mission is to advance professional interests and help independent publishers succeed through cooperative marketing, education, and industry advocacy; governance is provided by a voluntary board, and the membership exceeds 3,000 publishers of varying size and experience. A recent development is the May 2025 launch of the IBPA AI Resource Center, a members-only hub designed to keep publishers current on developments and applications of AI. The organization also runs events and honors through programs such as the IBPA Book Awards, which span around 60 categories to recognize achievements in independent publishing.
