IRMA is a Seattle-based multi-stakeholder initiative focused on advancing responsible mining practices. It brings together non-government organizations, mining companies, buyers of minerals and metals, affected communities, and trade unions to develop shared standards and verification approaches. The group aims to establish an independently verified framework that improves social and environmental performance at mining sites and creates value for affected communities. Its vision encompasses respect for human rights, safe and respectful workplaces, minimization of environmental harm, and positive legacies from mining. The Standard for Responsible Mining, launched in 2018, provides global certification for industrial-scale mines and covers areas such as health and safety, human rights, community engagement, pollution control, rights of indigenous peoples, revenue transparency, and land reclamation. Recent developments include the 2024 Chain of Custody Standard to track materials through the supply chain and a 2026 memorandum of understanding with the Solar Stewardship Initiative to advance responsible mineral sourcing across solar supply chains.
