Established by an initiative of the Japanese Government in 1998, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) carries out policy-oriented research in order to develop innovative policy instruments for sustainable development. IGES strives to be an agent of change towards a decarbonised society by working in close collaboration with governments, international organisations, research institutes, businesses and local communities. Based in Hayama, Japan, the institute has a special focus on the Asia-Pacific region, with offices in Bangkok, Beijing and New Delhi. Other offices in Japan include Tokyo, Kobe and Kitakyushu. Our diversified teams of international experts cover areas such as Climate and Energy, Natural Resources and Ecosystem Services, Sustainable Consumption and Production, Green Finance and Sustainable Business. 公益財団法人 地球環境戦略研究機関（IGES）は、「地球環境戦略研究機関設立憲章」の趣旨を踏まえ、新たな地球文明のパラダイムの構築を目指して、持続可能な開発のための革新的な政策手法の開発及び環境対策の戦略づくりのための政策的・実践的研究（戦略研究）を行い、その成果を様々な主体の政策決定に具現化し、地球規模、特にアジア太平洋地域の持続可能な開発の実現を図ることを目的とし、1998年3月に日本政府のイニシアティブと神奈川県の支援により設立されました。当初は財団法人として設立されましたが、2012年4月に公益財団法人に移行しました。 地球環境戦略研究機関設立憲章では、地球環境の危機をもたらしている現在の物質文明の価値観や価値体系を根本的に問い直し、新たな人類の営みのあり方や新たな文明のパラダイムを創造すること、そしてこれら新たなパラダイムに即して経済社会の仕組みを再構築し、地球環境時代を切り拓くことが人類社会の根源的な課題であるとの認識が示されています。また、同憲章では、世界人口の半分以上を占め、経済活動が飛躍的に拡大し、今後地球環境を保全していく上で決定的に重要な役割を担うアジア太平洋地域が、自ら持続可能な開発を実現していくことが国際社会の大きな課題であることが記されています。 IGESは、このような課題認識を踏まえながら、その解決に向けて、国際機関、各国政府、地方自治体、研究機関、企業、NGO、市民の皆様と連携し、各種の戦略研究を実施するとともに、関係者への情報提供、国際会議の開催、研修の実施等の様々な事業を行っています。
