Founded in 1985, the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy is a think tank dedicated to environmentally sustainable and equitable transportation worldwide. It collaborates with municipalities and non-governmental organizations in developing countries to implement projects that reduce air pollution, carbon emissions, traffic congestion, and accidents while expanding mobility for low-income populations. Based in New York City, ITDP operates through partnerships with international institutions to advance transport solutions that build local knowledge and public awareness of viable, low-carbon options. ITDP focuses on expanding high-quality, low-cost mass transit, planning and advocating for cycling and walking, and supporting the bicycle and rickshaw sectors, alongside urban revitalization, healthcare-access transport, traffic-demand management, institutional capacity building, and financing tools to improve performance and lower emissions. Recent collaborations include partnerships with UN-Habitat and UNEP as part of a strategy in Egypt developed with national authorities, and a tie-up with the Asian Development Bank to support a transport policy and network transformation in China. The organization also established the Sustainable Transport Award in 2005 to recognize cities making significant strides in sustainable transport.
