The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) is an international research institution in Austria focused on graduate education, science education, and research across physical, mathematical, computer, and life sciences. It is located in Klosterneuburg on the outskirts of Vienna and opened in 2009. The organization hosts more than 70 research groups and employs about 501-1000 people, with a planned expansion to 150 groups by 2036. ISTA operates with governance and management structures that ensure independence from political and commercial influences. Since 2023, ISTA has been led by its second President, Professor Martin Hetzer, a molecular biologist and former Senior Vice President at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California, USA.
