Based in San Francisco, the International Council of Ophthalmology is a nonprofit organization that partners with ophthalmologic societies and other stakeholders to strengthen eye-care education and expand access to high-quality vision care worldwide. Its roots go back to 1857, when ophthalmologists from several countries gathered for the World Ophthalmology Congress, one of the ICO's main initiatives that now convenes every two years in a different region to advance scientific programs, professional networking, and related activities. ICO's principal commitments include advancing ophthalmic education, especially training for ophthalmologists and eye-care personnel in developing countries, promoting collaboration among eye-care societies, and defining standards and guidelines to improve care. It also supports research to eradicate preventable blindness and works to raise global awareness of the impact of vision loss, advocating for stronger support for preservation and restoration of sight. A recent development involves a partnership with RCSEd to introduce the MRCS Ophthalmology course, linking ICO credentials with RCSEd College membership and post-nominals.
