Founded on May 15, 1908, in Paris, the International Ice Hockey Federation is the global governing body for ice hockey and inline hockey. It coordinates 72 member associations that serve as the sport’s national authorities and maintains the international rulebook, oversees international player transfers, and sets officiating guidelines. Each season, the IIHF runs around 25 world championships across five categories—men, women, juniors under-20, juniors under-18, and women under-18—and also oversees European club competitions and an inline hockey world championship. Based in Zurich, Switzerland, the IIHF supports its member associations through development programs and event governance that aim to broaden participation in hockey. In 2025 it partnered with Signify Group to apply an AI-based monitoring service to detect abuse targeting participants at IIHF Championships.
