Founded in 1985, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) operates as a professional association within mental health care, dedicated to understanding the effects of trauma. It serves as a forum for sharing research, clinical strategies, public policy concerns, and theoretical formulations on trauma, with the goal of disseminating knowledge about policy, program, and service initiatives that address traumatic stress and its consequences. Its membership spans psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, counselors, researchers, administrators, advocates, journalists, clergy, and other professionals from diverse settings worldwide. Based in Brentwood, Tennessee, ISTSS connects professionals across health facilities, private practice, universities, and non-university research foundations. It serves as a major professional society for sharing knowledge and expertise related to traumatic stress. In December 2019, ISTSS released a briefing paper addressing the traumatic impact of hate-based violence.
